Why you NEED to hire an interior designer!

Let’s face it- everyone is busy in this modern world. Have you caught up on all the design trends for 2020? This fall alone?! What if something doesn’t work properly in my kitchen reno? What if I pick a paint color, paint the entire room and HATE it? These questions/anxiety/fears are just the tip of the iceberg!

As a design professional, I have the experience, knowledge and continued learning for all these questions and more.  I am here to help narrow down your search, guide you, formulate a plan, and then implement that plan into action!

But I’ll save $1000 if I do it myself… but will you really? Your time is valuable too! As a design professional, I have the knowledge and leverage to narrow down your search on what you need quicker. Example: You spend a 100 hours researching and finding the perfect tile, flooring and paint color. I can usually do this in 6-10 hours depending on the project- because of the vendors that are my business partners (quality and dependable).

Quality partners.  You don’t want just any old schmuck doing your kitchen renovation when moving your gas and water lines right?! I can refer you to quality contractors based on your project needs and timeline.

It can wait until next year, right? With the ongoing pandemic, who knows when life will return to “normal.” So many people are taking the opportunity to create a relaxing and inviting environment at home right now. You may be surprised how long of a wait it may be- especially for a contractor.  Some contractors are a year or more out right now.  Even if you plan to renovate next year, it’s best to get on board with a design professional and contractor early to get on their list or wait list.

How to Pick Paint Colors Quickly.

Have you ever wondered… How the HECK am I going to pick 2 paint colors from the 23,578 offered here in THIS store alone?

*Raise Hand* Oh, me too!

It can be OVERWHELMING to go into a paint store these days.  So, what’s a busy girl to do??

Here’s what I’ve learned over the years:

First decide- what tones do I want to space to have- warm or cool?  After that decision is made- you eliminate about 50% of the options.  Great… that only leaves me with 11,789… *eye roll*… stay with me now. 😉

Will the space be used a lot (common) or is it a more private space?  Example: A living space vs. a master bedroom/bathroom. If it’s common space, use a more neutral, subtle color. The one exemption to this is IF you are OK with changing the paint color in 5 years or less. If you answer YES, it’s OK- go BOLD! If you’re like me… Ain’t nobody got time to be changin’ paint colors!! I’ll be lucky to change paint colors in 20 YEARS!! LOL! Ok, maybe 15! 😉 If it’s a private space, what colors are you drawn to? Blue? Green? Fuchsia Berry? We can’t be friends if you paint your walls in Fuchsia Berry- just kidding!! I TOTALLY painted part of the walls in one of my daughter’s bedroom a Fuchsia-ish color.

Now we are getting somewhere… do you want 1 or 2 colors in the room?  Some people prefer to have one consistent color and some prefer to have an accent color.  Accent colors come and go, so be prepared to change it, ‘cause accent colors can get old in 5 years or less.

You need Option 1 and Option 2.  “Really?! That’s it?!”  YES, really. Really- that is it. I have done this countless times… and EVERY. SINGLE. TIME… I am drawn to 2 paint colors/schemes. BUT, I think to myself… maybe I might like these other 28 colors?? NOPE. As soon as I get home and look/think about the colors- I am immediately drawn to 2 schemes.  Pick your top 2 schemes and head home.  If you’re heading home with 2 colors in mind- look at the colors on that same card that show different light/darks… it’s my go to easy/selection- pick the lightest (or next to lightest) color and skip at least one paint to find your accent color. Now get out of that paint store door! 😉

Once you’re home in your space- the color will change depending on the natural light and ambient light in that specific space.  Listen to your gut.  Usually one color/scheme will stick out depending on the light.  Go with it!  Now, pat yourself on the back!  You just picked your own paint color!

Design Trends: Exploring the Mixed Metal Finishes Trend.

I had a feeling this trend was coming into the mainstream.  Over 2 years ago, I started exploring fixtures and finishes for our custom home that we were building.  When I started looking at pictures of finished interiors, I noticed that I was starting to see different combinations of metals on fixtures, faucets, hardware, etc.  I thought, this could be done in a way that allowed timeless design to pair up with trendy-ish design effortlessly. But, how you ask?

  1. Keep it simple- use 2-3 finishes. Think of your main finish you want to use throughout your entire space (or that room). Example, I knew I wanted to use stainless steel/brushed nickel as my main finish in the master bathroom to keep things modern, but yet timeless. However, I also knew I want at least 1 accent finish in that room.
  2. Think about your line of sight or different levels.  I choose to keep the stainless at a lower level in my bathroom.  My hardware and fixtures are stainless, while the sconce and overhead lighting are a dark, antiqued finish.
  3. Theme. If you decide to go more modern for faucets, use more modern/trend lighting. I used modern farmhouse in my master bath as a theme.
